What’s your day job and how do you fit sports in around it?
I am a proud public servant, working specifically in accounting and finance for commercial and community development. I've been very lucky that my job is *usually* pretty predictable and I'm able to plan a few weeks in advance for most things. Sticking to the plan, listening to the 4am alarm, actually getting out of bed to get it done is the real challenge. Ironman training, just from a load and time perspective, made the juggle a struggle. One simply does not work a full-time job, train for an Ironman, have a social life AND get enough sleep. If you get 3 of those 4, you're killing it.

How long have you been doing triathlon and what made you start?
I've been doing tris for about 4 seasons. I am a fat kid turned marathon runner turned Ironman. I kept getting overuse injuries when I was only running, so I decided that swimming wasn't that hard (false) and I started using triathlon to force my own cross-training. I accidentally fell in love with being mediocre at 3 sports instead of just one.

Favorite race?
Rock'n'Rollman 70.3 in Macon, GA. My first 70.3 and a 3rd place overall podium. But that's not why I loved it. I got to race with my Tri Mom and my Tri Dad that day. They were not going to let me take on that race day alone, so we all went to Macon and we all raced our own race. Then on the way home, I met up with Steve Goodman and celebrated at Wild Leap. It was a family affair.

IMVA 70.3 2019 is a close second. Racing with Heather Hermann. Torrential rains. PRs. Meeting the NYPD Triathlon Team. So many great memories.

Most unfun race you’ve ever suffered through?
IM Chattanooga 2019 should be the obvious choice here. That run was about 2 degrees warmer than the surface of the sun. Sheesh. But IM New Orleans 70.3 2018 is actually my most hated race memory of all time. Not only was it JUST BARELY above wetsuit legal water temps, 20+ mph sustained winds should have canceled the swim because the winds prevented the safety boats from getting to the harbor off of Lake Pontchartrain. But no, this is Ironman. We swim, then bike, then run. So the swim was shortened and I started my first Ironman race thinking I was going to drown. The Bike was also no fun with these winds. I remember being blown around like a ragdoll on the bike that day. Totally flat course and one of my slowest splits of all time. I was livid. The run, fueled by rage, was amazing. A 13.1 PR.

What would your hashtag be if you were a professional triathlete?
#bemore Knowing that our reach goes beyond the start/finish chute is huge. Even as amateurs, I think sport gives us a unique opportunity to inspire and motivate other people to achieve their own goals, whether those are athletic or not. It is my goal to #bemore than a triathlete. I want to use this as a platform for change and a connection with people who I wouldn't have otherwise known. You never know when your life might be the spark that changes the world. #BeMore

What do you love about being a Reaper?
The support of this #worsttriteamever is my favorite thing about TriCoachGa. I love having my TCGa family to build me up, train with me, or keep me grounded when I need a reality check. I raced a 70.3 in the middle of the mountains in North Carolina last August. The run was brutal. Up the mountain. Down the Mountain. Repeat. On my second lap up the mountain, I came upon another Reaper. Total stranger. I was fairly new to the team. I screamed "DO YOUR JOB!" and just seeing that logo on the course was enough to keep me moving. We exchanged words of encouragement every time we passed from then on.

Are you coached? By whom? What makes them the best coach for you?
I am not currently coached. Coach Angel C coached me to the finish line of Ironman last season. I've had a number of interferences in 2020, so I'm coachless for now. I rely on the sage wisdom of Slayer and all who will offer it when I'm down about my lack of training. But yall...pandemic wedding planning is a more challenging undertaking than Ironman. I'm hopeful that 2021 will bring more opportunities for us to be together. ...

Don't Eat Large Amounts of Refined Carbohydrates
The worst way to prepare for a race is "carbohydrate loading," eating lots of spaghetti, bread or any other refined carbohydrates the night before the event. Almost 50 years ago, I showed that taking in huge amounts of refined carbohydrates can harm marathon runners by causing heart attacks (J Am Med Assoc, March 26, 1973;223(13):1511-1512). The extra carbohydrates are converted to fat that increases risk for forming plaques in your arteries. The extra fat also ends up in your liver. Extra fat in your liver reduces the amount of sugar that your liver can store, so you tire earlier. This is why "carbohydrate loading" has been abandoned by all knowledgeable athletes.
